How Does Counseling Work?
Reaching out for therapy, especially for your relationship, can feel overwhelming. Most people wait longer than they want to before getting help. If you're here, something isn’t working, and you’re ready for things to change.
Most of the people I work with are:
Couples feeling stuck in conflict or disconnection
Partners trying to recover from betrayal or rebuild trust
Individuals experiencing anxiety or stress connected to relationship challenges
You don’t have to keep navigating this on your own.
What to Expect in the First Session
My goals in the first session are to:
Fully understand what’s happening in your relationship or situation
Create a space where you feel heard, respected, and safe
Help you begin experiencing clarity right away
Start mapping out what’s contributing to the problem
Offer practical direction for change
Help you feel hopeful about what’s possible
Clients often tell me they feel a sense of relief and direction after the very first session.
I will ask you to share what brings you in, and I’ll guide the conversation with thoughtful questions. As I listen, I begin connecting patterns and helping you understand why things feel the way they do.
From there, we collaborate on clear next steps so you can begin making meaningful changes between sessions.
My Approach
I am an active therapist. I don’t just listen, I help you understand what’s happening and what to do about it.
Most of my work focuses on:
Improving communication
Breaking unhealthy patterns
Rebuilding trust after betrayal
Reducing conflict and emotional reactivity
Helping couples feel more connected and secure
When working with individuals, I focus on anxiety and stress that often develop within relationships, life transitions, or unresolved relational experiences.
Cost of Therapy
Therapy is an investment in your relationship, your well-being, and your future.
Sessions are 45 minutes: $190
Longer sessions are available if needed
Most clients begin meeting more frequently to build momentum, then space sessions out over time. I am flexible and will work with you to find a pace that fits your goals and schedule.
Insurance
I am an out-of-network provider.
This means:
Payment is due at the time of service
I provide a monthly superbill for possible reimbursement
Couples counseling is typically not covered by insurance.
Individual sessions may be partially reimbursed depending on your plan.
Many of my clients choose private pay because it allows for:
Greater flexibility
More focused, results-oriented work
No limitations from insurance requirements
Online Therapy in Michigan
I am based in Rochester Hills, Michigan and work with clients virtually across the state.
Online therapy allows for:
Convenience and flexibility
Consistency in scheduling
Privacy and comfort
Research shows that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions.
Telehealth allows me to provide high-quality care while also maintaining balance in my own life, something I value and encourage for my clients as well.
My Approach & Methods
I use research-informed methods to tailor therapy to your unique situation. I focus on practical strategies that help you understand patterns, improve communication, and create real, lasting change.
Some of the approaches I specialize in include:
Bowen Theory / Transgenerational Therapy (Murray Bowen) – a core part of my methodology. While most people have never heard of Bowen or Transgenerational Therapy, it’s by far the favorite approach of both my clients and me.
The Gottman Method (John & Julie Gottman) – evidence-based strategies for improving communication and connection in relationships.
Emotion-Focused Therapy / EFT (Sue Johnson) – helps partners process emotions and rebuild trust.
Trauma Theory (Collin Ross) – understanding how trauma impacts relationships and individual well-being.
Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (Albert Ellis) – practical tools to shift unhelpful thoughts and behaviors.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Aaron Beck, Donald Meichenbaum) – evidence-based strategies to reduce anxiety and stress.
Narrative Therapy (Epston & White) – reshaping the stories we tell about ourselves and our relationships.
Choice Theory (William Glasser) – focusing on personal responsibility and effective decision-making.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (Steven Hayes) – building psychological flexibility and coping skills.
Internal Family Systems (Richard Schwartz) – understanding internal parts and self-leadership.
I also stay current with the research of thought leaders in the field, including:
Esther Perel – intimacy and desire in relationships
Brene Brown – shame, vulnerability, and courage
Bessel van der Kolk – trauma and PTSD
Dan Siegel – interpersonal neurobiology and relational patterns
This range of methods allows me to customize therapy to your needs, blending what’s most effective for your relationship and personal growth.
